Sitra Annual Policy Conference

Wednesday 8 February 2012, Resource for London

This event is free for Sitra members

Highlights of the day:

  • Heidi Alexander MP, a Labour member of the Communities and Local Government Select Committee will be the opening speaker and will discuss whether she feels the Coalition has kept its promise to protect the most vulnerable.
  • Mike Short from Unison and Helen Giles from Broadway will be looking at how staff pay and terms and conditions is being affected under the pressures from the recession and competitive tendering.
  • Professor Peter Ambrose from the Pro-Housing Alliance will be explaining why housing is so important for a healthy society.
  • Delegates will also have a chance to see the fantastic St Mungo’s exhibition, Street Stories, the fruits of an oral history project with rough sleepers.
  • One-to-one surgery slots will be available for delegates to discuss their individual and organisational issues with Sitra’s Policy team.

Sitra’s 2012 annual general meeting will take place during the lunch break.

Promoting health and wellbeing with marginalised people: Working with Health and Wellbeing Boards

As part of the NHS reform agenda, Local Authority led Health and Wellbeing Boards are taking over lead responsibility for public health and the reduction of health inequalities. Sitra are running a series of half day briefing sessions for providers of housing, care and support, to provide an update on these developments and their implications for the sector.

This is a key opportunity for strategic, operational and service development managers to learn about local developments and consider how they can work in partnership with Health and Wellbeing Boards and Local Authority commissioners,  to improve health outcomes for vulnerable and marginalised groups.

Home Care and Human Rights: Key issues for Commissioners and Providers

The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) has just published results of an inquiry into older people and human rights in home care. This has raised some major concerns for both commissioners and providers of home care services.

G v Southwark and beyond: Best practice in accommodating young homeless people

7 March, Sitra HQ, London

The G v Southwark, subsequent case law, legislation and guidance have clarified the duties owed to young homeless people aged 16 and 17 and on leaving care.  In the current austere environment it is critical that Local Authorities and their partner housing and support providers work in partnership to ensure that these vulnerable young people are placed in safe and suitable accommodation.
