The DH 2010 'Recognised, Valued and Supported: Next Steps for the Carers Strategy' stated that the vision was for carers to be universally recognised and valued as being fundamental to strong families and stable communities. Support was to be tailored to meet individual needs, enabling carers to maintain a balance between their caring responsibilities and a life outside caring, enabling the person they support to be full and equal citizens.
The Health and Social Care Partnership aimed to bring together partners in health, social and voluntary care to deliver the carers strategy in a number of ways. The carers lead managed the south east and south west carers networks, which included Carers, Local Authority leads, voluntary sector representatives and health colleagues, as a platform to share and highlight good practice. In addition, the Health and Social Care Partnership ensured that carers needs were embedded in other workplans.
