Action based learning to support excellence in person centred services for people living with dementia

Now Booking for Both Strategic Leaders & Scheme Managers courses in Bradford May/July 2015

Sitra, the Association of Dementia Studies (ADS), at the University of Worcester, and the Housing Learning and Improvement Network (LIN) have come together in a learning partnership to deliver an innovative dementia leaders programme specifically for the housing sector. The programme was developed with funding support from the Department of Communities and Local Government (DCLG). The programme is made up of two courses: one for strategic leaders, the other for scheme managers.

I found the course to be very worthwhile, all the presentations were very informative and with the right level of tasks, videos and discussion. I came back very motivated to implement what I have learnt. The course was also very good value considering we had presentations from University of Worcester, SITRA, and Housing LIN – the broadness and depth of the expertise was incredible. - Colin Langdon -   Head of Older Peoples Services, One Housing Group

The Rationale

An estimated 670,000 people in England are living with dementia, a figure which is expected to double over the next thirty years. A cornerstone for improving care and support for older people with dementia and their carers is an informed and skilled workforce and much progress has been made in recent years to up-skill the health and social care workforce. Most people with dementia live in their own homes. The housing sector therefore plays a vital role in helping older people with dementia live well, whether they reside in specialist provision, such as sheltered housing or extra care, general needs housing, or are owner occupiers.

The learning partnership combines the strength, knowledge and networks of three organisations. ADS, a national and international centre of excellence in training, education and research in dementia studies; Sitra with its expertise in housing related support; together with the Housing LIN, the knowledge hub for housing, health and social care professionals in England involved in housing with care for older people.

Building on successful programmes run with a variety of organisations, including staff groups from the NHS and adult social care, the programme equips participants with a sound understanding of dementia and person centred practice; access to the latest best practice in housing and dementia support; together with practical tools and resources with which to lead and influence change within your organisation.

Who Is The Programme For?
Strategic Leaders - This course is designed for managers working at a strategic level in housing associations, private organisations, and local authorities . If you are part of your organisation’s senior management team or equivalent, or a board member, then the programme is likely to be of interest to you. If you work for a local authority and have responsibility for commissioning and/or management of housing at a senior level then the programme is likely to be of relevance and benefit to you. - This a 3 day course comprising of a 2 day course will a day follow up approx 6 weeks later. Delegates must be able to commit to all days of the course. COST - £750
Scheme Managers - This part of the programme is aimed at operational managers responsible for specialist provision and/or general needs housing. If you manage housing services where older people are tenants and have some responsibility for staff and resources then the programme will be of interest. This a 4 day course comprising of a 2 days and then further 2 days approx 6 weeks later. Delegates must be able to commit to all days of the course. COST - £750
We encourage organisations to consider sending representation to both the Strategic Leaders and Scheme Managers programme, as making the organisational and cultural change necessary to support developing person centred services for older people with dementia requires ‘buy-in’ across an organisation. A 10% discount will be given to Strategic Leaders whoes organisations also send someone on the Scheme Leaders course.

All participants will develop a sound knowledge and confidence in working with people with dementia and their carers. They will be able to identify what needs to change within their organisation/service to enhance the quality and relevance of services that are provided and what this means for the people you manage and local partners you work with.

The first programme was run in the West Midlands in Summer 2014. The evaluation of this intial programme will be posted in due course together with details of all future courses
